Surrogacy

Surrogacy

We are convinced that motherhood needs to be protected.

1.        Surrogacy violates the rights of women.

Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance.  (Article 25(2)) Universal Declaration of Human Rights).

2.        Surrogacy violates the rights of children.

States Parties shall take all appropriate national, bilateral and multilateral measures to prevent the abduction of, the sale of or traffic in children for any purpose or in any form. (Convention on the Rights of the Child, article 35).

3.        Surrogacy and adoption are two different practices since the latter has the more possible obligation to put the child’s and family’s interests at the front.

States Parties which recognize and/or permit the system of adoption shall ensure that the best interests of the child shall be the paramount consideration… (Article 21, Convention on the Rights of the Child).

4. Our Commitment:

We therefore call for a total abolition of commercial surrogacy and request governments to put policies in place protecting motherhood and childhood from commercialization.
