1. The Holy Bible praises the role of parents in caring for their children.
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. (Proverbs 1:8-9).
2. International law recognizes the primate of parents in the educational and religious upbringing of their children.
Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children. (Article 26(3)Universal Declaration of Human Rights).
3. Parents have the moral right to protect children against doctrines or practices which they conceive as dangerous.
Although the children have to be informed about the existence of ‘heretic worldviews’, they need not be encouraged to deliberate on them. (Prof. Dr. Frank Dietrich, Critical Reflection and the Limits of Parental Authority).
4. Our Commitment:
We therefore stand for a limited government role regarding parental rights; however, in specific situations where basic human rights are at stake or human dignity is violated, this role may need to expand.
